DIGESTIVE SYSTEM Flashcards
(26 cards)
The organ system that gives energy and nutrition
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
is a complex
network of organs and processes that
work together to break down food into
nutrients that the body can absorb
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
is the process of *mechanically *and
enzymatically breaking down food
into substances for absorption into
the bloodstream.
DIGESTION
Food contains three macronutrients
that require digestion before they can
be absorbed:
FATS, CARBOHYDRATES, AND PROTEIN
What are the 2 types of digestion?
MECHANICAL & CHEMICAL DIGESTION
Involves physically breaking down food substances into smaller particles to more effciently undergo chemical digestion.
MECHANICAL DIGESTION
Is to further degrade the molecular structure of the ingested compounds by digestive enzymes into a form that is absorbable into the bloodstream.
CHEMICAL DIGESTION
Is the beginning of the digestive tract.
MOUTH
The mouth is located in your throat near your ____ ( ____ )
TRACHEA ( WINDPIPE )
Is located near in your throat near your **trachea ( windpipe ) **
MOUTH
The ____ receives food from your mouth when you swallow.
ESOPHAGUS
Is a** small flap** that folds over your windpipe to prevent you from choking
EPIGLOTTIS
A series of* muscular contactions* within the esophagus called ____ delivers food to your stomach.
PERISTALSIS
Is a hollow organ or ” container “ that holds food while it is being mixed with stomach enzymes.
STOMACH
Is a ** 22-foot long muscular tube** that breaks down food using enzymes released by the pancreas and bile from the liver
Peristalsis also woks in this organ.
SMALL INTESTINE
Is the ** first segment** of the small intestine. Its largely responsible for the continuous breaking down process.
DUODENUM
they are mainly responsible for the absorption of nutrients in the bloodstream
JEJUNUM & ILLEUM
This organ also makes insulin.
PANCREAS
Secretes digestive enzymes into the duodenum that break down protein, fats, and carbohydrates.
PANCREAS
Is the chief hormone in your body for metabolizing sugar.
INSULIN
Is the process the nutrients absorbed from the small intestine.
LIVER
Bile from the _ secreted into the small intestine also plays an important role in digesting fat and some vitamins.
LIVER
Stores and concentrates bile from the liver
GALLBLADDER
Is responsible for processing waste.
6-foot long muscular tube that connects the small intestine to the rectu
LARGE INTESTINE
