Digestive System Flashcards
(13 cards)
Pharynx
Throat- opens into trachea and esophagus-food enters pharynx and swallowing reflex is triggered
Mouth
Ingest and mechanically break down food-starch with salivary amylase-saliva lubricates and starts digesting food
Epiglottis
Blocks trachea opening
Esophagus
Muscular tube that conveys food to the stomach- peristalsis: wavelike involuntary muscle contradictions squeeze food through alimentary canal to stomach
Stomach
Chemical and mechanical digestion-proteins are chemically digested by pepsin-food is turned into thin soupy liquid-lined with mucus to prevent ulcers
Liver
Produces bile(imulsifying agent, not enzyme)- turning large fat globules into tiny droplets
Gall bladder
Stores/holds bile
Small intestine
Secretes enzymes to finish chemical digestion-all absorption of nutrients occur here-contains villi that increase surface area for absorption
Large intestine
Reabsorption of water-ecoli(bacteria producing vitamin K)-diarrhea(not enough water absorption)-constipation(too much water absorption)
Pancreas
Secretes juices for chemical digestion
Salivary glands
Produce saliva- produce amylase to break down starch
Rectum
Accumulates feces to be let out through the anus
Anus
Let’s out feces accumulated in the rectum
