1
Q

Name the two changes in the digestive system

A

Physical and chemical

2
Q

Explain the physical changes in the body

A

1) the teeth cut and grind the food into smaller particles in the mouth.
2) the stomach churns the food into a smooth mixture called chyme.

3
Q

Name the chemical change.

A

Digestive enzymes are chemicals present in digestive juices. They help breakdown food into smaller particles for absorption into the blood. Each enzyme works on one nutrient

4
Q

Name the parts of the digestive system

A

Mouth, oesophagus, liver, pancreas, stomach, small intestine

5
Q

Explain the mouth.

A

Teeth cut and grind food into smaller particles. Food mixed with saliva. Saliva contains the enzyme salivary amylase. This changes starch into maltose

6
Q

Explain the oesophagus

A

It joins the mouth and stomach. The food travels down the tube and is pushed along by the muscular movement , this is called peristalsis.

7
Q

Explain the stomach.

A

It is a muscular bag. It churns the food and turns it into a smooth mixture called chyme. The enzyme pepsin turns protein into peptide chains, chyme leave the stomach into small intestine.

8
Q

Explain liver and pancreas.

A

Liver: the gall bladder produces bile, which breaks down fats,

Pancreas: products enzymes

9
Q

Explain the small intestine.

A

Join stomach to large intestine. Bile, pancreatic juices and intestine juices are added to food here, chemical change happens here.
Protein + peptide chains= amino acids
Sugars = simple sugars( glucose)
Fats= fatty acids and glycerol.
Digested food is observed into the blood.

10
Q

Explain absorption in blood

A

Inner layer contains tiny hair like fingers called villi. Digested food goes through the small intestine then the blood then the villi. Fatty acids and glycerol go to lymph system then blood. Glucose and amino acids directly to blood.

11
Q

4 points in the large intestine

A
  • attached to small intestine
  • vitamin k and b made here.
  • waste(faeces) pushed along using peristalsis
  • waste leaves via rectum
12
Q

4 guidelines for healthy digestive system

A
  • eat diet high in fibre
  • drink lots of water
  • reduce Alcohol
  • eat natural products, e.g natural yoghurt
13
Q

3 Function of digestive system

A

1) food is broken into particles
2) nutrients passed into blog for energy
3) waste matter is excreted
