Digestive System II Flashcards
Salivary glands
- open into oral cavity
- receive both sympathetic (thick saliva) and parasympathetic (watery saliva) innervation
Minor salivary gland
- scattered in submucosa of oral cavity
- named for location (lingual, buccal, labial, pharyngeal, palatine)
Major salivary gland
- compound gland
- encapsulated with thin septa between lobules
- typically tubuloacinar organization
What type of secretion does the parotid salivary gland have?
predominately serous secretion
What glands have mixed serous and mucous secretion?
mandibular
sublingual
zygomatic
molar (buccal)
What do serous cells form?
acini or demilunes, which cap mucous acini
What do mucous cells form?
acini or tubuloacinar units
What surrounds both acini and intercalated ducts?
myoepithelial cell processes
contraction of cell processes helps move secretions along the duct system
Duct system of salivary glands is branched or unbranched?
branched
What 2 types of interlobular secretory ducts secrete H2O and electrolytes?
intercalated ducts
striated ducts
Intercalated ducts
- very short and inconspicuous
- arise directly from the acini
Striated ducts
- continuous with the intercalated ducts
- striations are a result of basal mitochondria aligned between membrane infoldings
Name the 2 ducts of the excretory duct system
interlobular duct
main duct
Where do main ducts open to?
oral cavity
Name the 6 functions of the salivary glands
- protection of the oral cavity and teeth
- production of lubricant for dry ingesta
- provide fluid for rumen and pH adjustment
- source of IgA from adjacent plasma cells and perhaps hormones
- production of digestive enzymes
- regulation of electrolyte balance
