Digestive System (vocab terms) Flashcards
(18 cards)
the use of chemicals like acids and enzymes to break food down into smaller molecules
Chemical digestion
the use of physical methods like chewing to break food down into smaller pieces
Mechanical digestion
(blanks) are necessary for most chemical reactions in our bodies
Enzymes
of or relating to nourishment or nutrition
Alimentary
a bitter greenish-brown alkaline fluid that aids digestion and is secreted by the liver and stored in the gallbladder.
Bile
Accessory Organs:
This organ balances and breaks down nutrients. It also produces bile which helps carry away the waste and break down fats. This bile is necessary for the digestion process. What am I?
The liver!
Accessory Organs:
This organ helps the intestines absorb nutrients from food intake. It produces chemicals to digest the food we eat. It also secretes enzymes that work together with bile from this organ and gallbladder to help break don substances for proper digestion and absorption. What am I?
The pancreas!
Accessory Organs: (read the whole thing)
This organ is a sac under the liver which stores bile. The bile from the liver is stored in this organ until you eat. When you eat, the stomach releases a hormone that contracts the (blank) to release the bile.
The gallbladder!
an open sore that develops on the lining of the stomach
Ulcer
a condition where the body cannot properly digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and dairy products.
Lactose intolerance
a chronic autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system reacts abnormally to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley. This reaction causes damage to the small intestine, leading to inflammation and malabsorption of nutrients.
Celiac Disease
Tube like structure that which pushes down food using peristalsis
Esophagus
Helps to absorb nutrients into the blood. (Blank) continues the process of digestion by breaking down food further with enzymes and bile.
Small intestine
Last part of the digestive tract and of the digestive system. Water is absorbed here.
Large intestine
Uses an enzyme called amylase to break down carbohydrates or starches in to simpler forms.
Salivary amylase
Responsible for mechanical and chemical digestion. Squishes food and uses gastric acid to break down proteins.
Stomach
The remaining waste material is stored in the (blank) as feces before being removed by defecation.
Rectum
What is the job of the digestive system?
To break down food into simpler forms.
