Respiratory System (vocab cards) Flashcards
(14 cards)
the process by which living organisms exchange gases, primarily taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide; breathing
Respiration
the process by which air enters your lungs
Inhalation
the action of sending air out of your lungs
Exhalation
thin muscle below the lungs and heart that separates the chest from the abdomen
Diaphragm
microscopic balloon-shaped structures located at the end of the respiratory tree.
*They expand during inhalation, taking in oxygen, and shrink during exhalation, expelling carbon dioxide
Alveoli
-is the voice box
-passes air to the trachea
-houses the vocal cords
Larynx
-the windpipe
-passes from the larynx to the lungs
-supported by rings of cartilage
Trachea
-the hollow area behind the nose
-rich in mucus-membranes (moistens air)
- warms air as it travels to the filters
Nasal cavity
-full of hair and mucus to trap microbes and dust
Nose
-the throat
-splits into the epiglottis and larynx
Pharynx
- “door” at the top of the larynx
-opens during breathing
-closes during eating
Epiglottis
-Pair of organs in the thoracic cavity
- consist largely of air spaces
- site of breathing
Lungs
- Two branches (right & left) at the bottom of the trachea
-Each leads to a lung - branch further in the lungs
Bronchi
-small branches with lungs
Bronchioles
