- the ability to read, write, and the ability to use language, numbers images and other means to understand systems of culture

- basic, nontechnical knowledge about computers and how to use them
- ex: search engines, word processing, spreadsheets, browser basics, keyboard shortcuts

- requires people to recognize when info is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use the info effectively
- ex: wikipedia, commercial search engines, educational search engines, children’s search engines

- a digital literacy person finds, manages, evaluates, consumes, synthesizes, creates and co-creates digital content and construct new knowledge

Why is digital literacy important to your practice?
A
- your students will already have basic digital literacy skills
- they will expect to use those skills in through learning experiences
- you must help students effectively: find, manage, evaluate, consume, synthesize and create/ construct new knowledge

What is the digital divide?
A
the gap between those individuals and communities that have, and don’t have access to the info technologies that are transforming our lives

How can you assess the technological literacy level of your students?
A
- send questionnaires home
- pre-assessment activities
- pair technology-savvy students with those less savvy
- Include class time to work on project
