-cultural difference (language, qualifications, customs) disadvantages the immigrant group In a host society
- described a culture clash between W. Indians (oily,no queuing at bus stops) and English ‘hosts’ (private, quiet)
- the hosts were not raciest-just unsure/suspicious about how to act towards the newcomers
- this uncertainity led t conflict. Over jobs/ housing, etc but Patterson was convinced that harmony would follow

-2011 census- 16-64 Bangladeshi + black Africans suffer unemployment, highest employment rate- white-73%
What does Dorling argue about racism?
- points out that many problems with immigration are more to do with skin colour than status
- it is not the immigration that is of actual concern, it is who the potential immigrants might
- Britain has both inwards and outwards migration- there are lot of british citizens with grandchildren living abroad as there are people with grandparents abroad
What does Platt argue about ethnicity and employment?
-the white women have higher proportion of older workers and may not command higher pay rates due to uk gender differences
-racism and sexism probably play their part in ethnicity and employment with further factors of class and age
- higher part time employment rates may be Down to higher monrates of disability amongst Bangladeshi men and the number of small business men in Pakistani ethnicity may be down to the types of jobs they do
What did Roger’s and Pilgrim find about ethnicity and mental health?
- metal health studies show that afro-Caribbeans display higher levels of depression and rates of schizophrenia than majority of the population
- in general, BME groups are over-represented in mental health inpatient settings
- mhs (viewed as institutions of social control, based on dominant perceptions of young afro- Caribbean men exhibiting behaviour as a social threat
- supported by research from the last 3 decades, which shows this group is more likely than its ethnic majority to be compulsorily admitted to mental health institution and placed in locked wards
- might not be racially prejudice- institutions may discriminate due to norms, values that impact how their heath is understood
How does language and culture cause ethnic inequalities in healthcare?
- Asian women are less likely to visit ante- and post-natal clinics, explaining higher levels of infant mortality, Asian women often prefer to see female doctors, and may find it difficult to discuss health issues with white male doctors, the number of female GPs is lowest in those areas which have the highest concentrations of Asian householdso
- older Asian women speak poor English, may create difficulties communicating with, health professionals are often not sufficiently familiar with the religious, cultural, dietary. Practices of different ethnic groups so concerns may not been understood/ needs met.
