Discovering Computers Mod 1 Flashcards
(67 cards)
Digital/computer literacy
Having current knowledge and understanding of computers, mobile devices, the web, and related technologies
Digital citizen
Person familiar with how to use technology to become an educated and productive member of the digital world (ethical, legal, productive use)
Computer
Electronic device, operating under the control of instructions stored in its own memory, that can accept data, process the data to produce information, and store information for future use
Memory
Electronic components that store instructions waiting to be executed by the processor, data needed by those instructions, and the results of processing the data into information
Internet
Global collection of millions of computers linked together to share information
Network
A collection of 2 or more computers connected together to share resources.
Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity)
Wireless data network technology that provides high-speed data connections that do not require a physical connection.
Server
Powerful high capacity computer you access using the internet or other network. It stores files and “serves” them or makes the files available to users; usually grouped at a location, called a data center
Online social network
an online community where users can share their interests, ideas, stories, photos, music, and videos with other registered users via a social networking website, such as Facebook, Google+ Twitter, Instagram, or Snapchat.
Big data
A term that refers to the large and complex data sources that defy easy management with traditional data processing methods.
Vacuum tubes
Cylindrical glass tubes that control the flow of electrons. (ENIAC & UNIVAC)
Transistors
Replaced vacuum tubes, were smaller, cheaper, and more reliable.
Integrated Circuits
Silicone chip about the size of your thumb, equivalent of thousands of vacuum tubes or transistors.
Microprocessor (Processor)
Chip that contains a central processing unit, aka the “brains” of a computer. Faster, smaller, and less expensive than integrated circuits.
PC (personal computer)
Computer intended for individual use instead of commercial or industrial (IBM after Apple II)
Internet of Things (IoT)
An environment in which processors are embedded in every product imaginable, and these things in turn communicate with one another via the internet or wireless networks.
Embedded computer
A computer that functions as one component in a larger product and has a specific purpose. Small and limited hardware but enhances other devices
ATM
Automated teller machine
Chip-and-pin technology
Stores data on an embedded chip instead of a magnetic strip.
Kiosk
Free standing booth usually placed in a public area that can contain a display device used to show information to the public or event attendees.
Data brokers
Hold thousands of pieces of information on hundreds of millions of consumers worldwide, sells the data to interested third parties.
Identity theft
Involves using someone’s personal information such as name, social security number, or credit card number to commit financial fraud.
Telecommuting
Working from home
Intelligent workplace
Uses technology to enable workers to connect to the company’s network, communicate with one another, use productivity software , meet via web conferencing, and more.
