DISEASE (half yearly) Flashcards
(10 cards)
LESSON 2
What are the steps involved in the stimulus-response pathway?
- Stimulus
- Sense Organs / Receptor
- Sensory Neuron
- CNS & Relay Neuron
- Motor Neuron
- Effector / Muscles and Glands
- Response
LESSON 2
Identify the components of the Central Nervous System (CNS)
- Brain
- Spinal Cord
LESSON 2
Identify the components of the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
- Nerve cells
- Sense organs
LESSON 3
Identify 3 examples of stimuli
Any sound or any object
Some examples:
- A glass of water
- Sand
- A soccer ball
LESSON 3
Identify the 5 sense organs that detect stimuli and their role in triggering the response.
- Skin (touch): detects pressure and pain
- Ears (sound): detects sound waves
- Nose (smell): detects chemical smells in the air
- Eye (sight): detects light
- Tongue (taste): detects chemicals in foods & drinks
LESSON 3
Describe a REFLEX ACTION and how it protects your body from harm
Reflex actions are:
Automatic responses to stimuli.
They protect us by creating fast responses to potentially harmful stimuli.
What does the relay neuron do?
Processes impulses from the brain and connects the sensory neuron to the motor neuron.
What does the motor neuron do?
Carry impulses from brain and spinal cord to muscles and glands
What do sensory neurons do?
They carry impulses from the sense organs to your spinal cord and brain
What is the function of an axon?
It carries messages up and down the body
