Disease Process Flashcards
Infectious vs Degenerative Disease
Infectious: when bacteria enters the body
Degenerative: aging process causing tissue to wear down
Acute vs Chronic Disease
Acute: sudden onset-mostly- quick recovery time
Chronic: 6 months or longer, requires ongoing medication and treatment
Describe the 3-step infection process
pathogens enter the body, grow, and multiply
Dyspnea, wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness are symptoms of what?
Asthma
What is dyspnea?
difficult or labored breathing
What is the difference between asthma, pneumonia, and aspiration pneumonia?
-Asthma is a chronic respiratory disorder due to inflammation
-Pneumonia is the inflammation of lungs due to infection, where the air sacs fill with fluid and pus
-Inhaling foreign matter into lungs, symptoms include fatigue, cough, fever
COPD stands for ?
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
What is COPD? What are the 2 main causes of COPD? Symptoms?
group of chronic lung diseases
smoking and air pollution
coughing, hypoxia, dyspnea, fatigue
Reduced supply of oxygen to tissue
hypoxia
Consistently high blood pressure(silent killer)
hypertension
CAD vs Heart Failure
-narrowing of coronary arteries due to plaque buildup, resulting in heart not receiving adequate oxygen and nutrients
-heart not being able to pump adequate amount of blood to the body
Heart Attack(aka?) vs Stroke
-blood clot or atherosclerosis preventing blood from reaching heart
-when blood flow to the brain is blocked, causing brain cells to die
What is a prereq for CAD?
heart attack
Most commonly due to clots or ruptured artery in brain
stroke
Process of thickening or hardening of the arteries caused by plaque buildup
atherosclerosis
