Leading cause to skin cancer?
excessive exposure to sunlight.
Fair-skinned people and elderly are more susceptible
1 in 5 people develop skin cancer.
Basal cell carcinoma (type of skin cancer)
most common type but least dangerous
when the tumor arises from pre-cancerous cells in the stratum basale, but rarely metastasize.
Squamous cell carcinoma (type of skin cancer)
less common and will metastasize in neglected.
when tumors arise from keratinocytes in the stratum spinosum of scalp, ears, or back of hand. often from pre-existing skin lesions on sun-damaged skin.
Malignant melanoma (type of skin cancer)
least common but metastasizes quickly but can be fatal.
most life-threatening cancer among young women
the tumors arise from malignant melanocytes pre-existing mole.
What are some early detection one can have?
asymmetry of mole.
irregular border of mole
uneven and multiple coloration
diameter greater than 1/4 inch.
Risk factors for skin cancer.
- people with fair skin who burn more than tan
- excessive exposure to sunlight, and frequent occurrences of severe sunburn.
- family history of skin cancer.
- people who have a suppressed immune system
describe a first degree burn.
characterized by redness, and pain in the surface epidermis.
few days of healing.
for sunburns are this degree.
both UVB and UVA
describe Second degree burn.
destroys the entire epidermis and atleast parts of the dermis.
- redness, blister formation, fluid accumulation and pain
- healing takes several weeks.
describe third degree burn.
destroys epidermis, dermis and eve parts of the hypodermis. least painful .
- loss of sensory nerve endings
- excessive fluid loss can lead to massive infection.
- regeneration is slow-grafting might be necessary. considerable scarring may occur.
