Q

What is the genetic explanation for OCD?

A

increased risk of inheriting disorders
SERT gene - if not working low levels of seratonin in are produced
COMPT gene - if not working high levels of dopamine are produced
Ozaki looked at 2 unrelated families and discovered 6/7 members had OCD
Comstock found 86% chance of developing disorder if first degree relative has got it

Q

What are the strengths of the genetic explanation of OCD?

A

• scientific credibility - methodology and empirical evidence
• research support -
Nesdadt found your 5x more likely to have OCD from family members than the general population
Billett 14 studies showing how one twin having OCD may affect the co-twin
• real world application

Q

What are the weaknesses of the genetic explanation of OCD?

A

• there’s not 100% concordance rates - is there other factors? environmental, aquired (mowrer two process model)?

Q

What is the neural explanation of OCD?

A

people with OCD have high levels of dopamine
animal studies have proven that does of drugs which increase dopamine to high levels cause the behaviours associated with OCD
low levels of seratonin - evidence of anti depressant drugs that increase seratonin have proven to decrease OCD symptoms.

Q

What are the weaknesses of the behavioural explanation of Phobias?

A
  • Determinism
    1. no stimulus
    2. different phobias are aquired by different processes
  • Reductionism
    biological preparedness
    nature or hardwired phobias

Q

what is the cognitive explanation of depression?

A

Albert Ellis- ABC model
A ctivating event
B elief
C onsequences
Mustabatory thinking - certain things must be true to a person for them to be happy;
1. i must be approved of or accepted by people i find important
2. i must do well, else i am worthless
3. the world must give me happiness, else i will die

Q

What is a treatment used for OCD?

A

chemotherapy, 4-6 weeks until see effect, antidepressants

Gava
anti depressants are very common, SSRI’s (prozac) increasing seratonin

SSRI’s block reabsorbtion of seratonin

Tricyclics e.g. clomipramine
stronger with more side effects, offered as a second resort

Q

What is a strength of the treatments for OCD?

A
  • SOOMRO
    meta analysis of 17 studies
SSRI’s were more effective than placebos after 3 months declining for about 70%
  • MAT
takes little to no time to take a pill
    very available
    cheap
    no effort
17
Q

What are the weaknesses of the treatments for OCD?

A
  • KAREN
criticises research as it only shows short term affectiveness
  • MAINA
    patient relapse after stopping medication
  • Side effects
    may become dependent
comes with any types of drugs
18
Q

What is the treatments for depression?

A

CBT is very common therapy
Homework- thought records etc
R.E.B.T rational emotive behavioural therapy
Disputing; ABCDEF model
A ctivating event
B elief
C onsequences
D isputing effective attitudes
E effects on life
F eelings

Types of disputing; Logical, Pragmatic (practical), Empirical (reality)

19
Q

What is a strength of the treatments for depression?

A
  • It works - Ellis found 90% based on 27 sessions
  • teaching you life skills
20
Q

What is a weakness of the treatments for depression?

A
  • Is it appropriate?
    MAT
    Individual differences
    Expensive
    Time consuming
    Not always available
  • Biological factors?
21
Q

What are the treatments for phobias?

A

Therapy purpose is to unlearn

Systematic Desensitization-
Reciprical inhibition, calming techniques
Fear hierarchy, working your way to a goal

Flooding - severe exposure

Counter conditioning, maladaptive to adaptive

22
Q

What is a strength of the treatments for phobias?

A
  • it works
    Joseph Wolpe 75%
  • controlled pace of procedures
23
Q

What are the weaknesses of the treatments for phobias?

A
  • symptom substitution
  • no support from therapists in the outside world
  • MAT
    needs to be motivation
    can be expensive
    not always available
    requires time
