Psychological disorder
Deviant, distressful, and dysfunctional patterns of thoughts, feelings, or behaviors.
Psychopathology
The scientific study of psychological disorders including their symptoms, causes, and treatment.
Etiology
The cause of a psychological disorder.
Atypical
Not typical; abnormal.
Harmful dysfunction
The view that psychological disorders result from the inability of an internal mechanism to perform its natural function.
Flight of ideas
System of mania that involves an abruptly switching in coversation from one topic to another.
Hopelessness theory
A cognitive theory of depression proposes the expectancy that highly desirable outcomes will not occur and that one is powerless to change the situation.
Rumination
In depression, the tendency to repetitively and passively dwell on one’s depressed symptoms, their meanings, and their consequences.
Suicide
Death caused by intentional, self-directed injurious behavior.
Schizophrenia
A mental illness that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. Symptoms include hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking and behavior, and negative symptoms.
