distribution - stats Flashcards
(7 cards)
when to use binomial distribution
- when there are a fixed number of trials
- when there are two outcomes, success or failure
- there is a fixed /constant probability of success
- the trials are independent of each other
what do the variables in the binomial distribution represent
X ~ B(n,p)
~ means distributed
B means binomially
n is how many times the game is played
p is the success probability
when does coding affect standard deviation and variance
when the coding involves multiplication or division
whats ur called when each outcome has equal probability
discrete uniform distribution
when to use normal distribution
Symmetrical data:
Single peak (unimodal):
The distribution should have one clear peak or mode.
Continuous data:
While some discrete variables can be approximated by a normal distribution, it’s most appropriate for continuous variables that can take on any value within a range.
Large sample sizes:
The larger the sample size, the more likely the distribution will approximate a normal distribution, especially for variables that are not perfectly normally distributed.
why cant we rule out probabilities of events in normal distribution
The tails of a Normal distribution are infinite.
Cannot rule out extreme events
what is a hypothesis test
A hypothesis test is a statistical test that is used to determine whether there is enough evidence in a sample of datato infer that a certain condition is true for the entire population
