- multiplier effect as education = more skill = attracts businesses = more employment opportunities etc

- global shift = high levels of deindustrialisation = industries e.g 2015 Redcar closed down due to cheap labour abroad =large scale unemployment = few economic opportunities for young ppl = migrate elsewhere
Rural Urban Continuum
Shows interconnectedness between urban / rural areas
Causes for uneven population distribution
- Pollution : rural = less noise + air pollution , Prevailing wind blows pollution away from SW and to E = rich ppl moving to W
- Access : public transport
- Physical barriers : mountains
- Land Use : rural = more mining + farming = hard to build on = sparse population
- Planning Polics = no building on green belt = more ppl in inter cite + brownfield developments
City vs Rural
City : Liverpool
Rural : Lerwick in Shetlands
Birth rate : 12.4 C vs 13.3 R
Death Rate : 9.2 C vs 10 R
International Migrants : 3453 C vs 39 R
Internal Migrants 1078 C vs -54 R
Characteristics in Rural vs Urban
Rural :
- ageing population
- white
- homogenous
Urban:
- younger families
- ethnically diverse
- heterogenous
Causes for different characteristics
E.g Lerwick has more men of 10-59 due to more jobs in fishing + energy industry
More women 80+ = longer female life expectancy
E.g Liverpool has more men 20-49 = more jobs opportunities for them
More young ppl in urban areas as higher levels of economic activity = more chance of employment
Urban = more social + entertainment places = more attractive for younger ppl
More diversification in cities = social clustering + places of worship + ethnic food etc
E.g Liverpool has 11.1% ethnically diverse population vs Lerwick’s 3.2%
BUT rural areas can have international migrants e.g Lerwick attracts Polish workers for farming + fishing
How can local authorities create ethnically homogenous areas
Allocating social housing in particular areas to some socio-economic groups and not others
How are Places shaped by International Influences
- Migration : heterogenous e.g Al Rahma Mosque in Liverpool has 2500 spaces
- International Visitors: Liverpool has 310000 ppl visit The Beatles Exhibition w/ 60% from overseas
- Global Brands / TNC
- Transport + Internet Links e.g Liverpool John Lennon Airport connects the city to 25 countries + handles 5m ppl in 2019
- Conflict + Competition : Lerwick vs Iceland in Mackerel fishing industry. Iceland’s quota increased to allow them to get more fish
- Cultural + Sporting Events : Liverpool designated European Capital of Culture = better cultural profile. Hosted lots of matches in Anfield Stadium + LFC know globally
