Hispanic traditions
Pregnancy seen as normal
Women’s mother may be preferred birthing partner
May be vocally expressive or stoic
New mothers avoid cold, bathing and exercise for 6 weeks postpartum
Pregnancy is “hot” condition
Colostrum may be seen as bad or spoiled milk and this harmful to the baby

Many folk diseases affect children (mal de ojo - evil eye, caida de la mollera - fallen fontanelle, empacho- stomach pain)
Herbal remedies often used: chamomile tea - used to treat colic, GRETA - yollowish powder used to treat empacho (contains lead), AZARCON - reddish orange powder used to treat empacho (has lead)

A chubby baby is seen as a healthy baby
Febrile baby will often be bundled up
Belly button binders may be used to prevent an “outie”
Jehovah Witnesses
Tobacco forbidden, moderate alcohol allowed. No meat unless animal blood properly drained. Do not believe in blood transfusions. New Testament command to abstain from blood. - accept other treatment other than blood transfusion, non-blood expanders are ok and alternative may be requested, autologous blood donations are not acceptable (bone marrow transplants)
Jehovah witnesses
Medications ok unless derived from blood products. Believe life begins at conception and are opposed to abortion
Don’t vote or serve in military
Believe in life but not to take extraordinary measure to prolong life
Organ donation is an individual decision, blood must be removed beforehand. Autopsy is acceptable if required by law, burial or cremation is accepted
Islam/Muslim traditions
Food should be halal, pork and alcohol prohibited
Right hand is used for eating, left hand used for toileting and hygiene . Muslim women may only want to be treated by other women. Muslims pray 5 times a day. Boys often circumcised

Abortion is forbidden after 4 months; allowed prior to that only when the mothers life is in danger or rape. Attempts to shorten life prohibited. Maintaining life for a prolonged time through life support is not encouraged

Autopsies permitted for medical and legal purposes only (because of delayed burial)
Cremation is forbidden; body should be washed by a same-sex Muslim at the time of death and burial should occur in 24 hours
