Diuretics
Prevent reabsorption of water and some electrolytes, increase urine output
Lasix
Loop diuretic, potassium wasting, inhibits sodium, potassium, chloride transporter in distal convoluted tubule of nephron, decrease sodium reabsorption
Thiazide
Potassium wasting, act directly on kidneys, decreases absorption , reabsorption begins at distal convoluted tubes
Oxybutynin (Ditropan XL)
Anticholinergic, reduces muscle spasms of bladder and urinary tract, USED FOR OVERACTIVE BLADDER , urinary urgency, nocturia, urine incontinece, neurogenic bladder
Urecholine
Cholinergic, stimulates bladder contractions to facilitate voiding
Pyridium
Treats pain, burning, increased urination and increased urge to urinate, (frequency causes urine to turn bright, orange in color)
Flomax
Decreases contraction in smooth muscle of prostatic capsule l, decreasing symptoms of BPH
Proscar
Shrinks prostate , 5 alpha reductase inhibitors
Colace
Stool softener
Imodium
Antispasmodics, relieves diarrhea
Enemas
Fleets, soap suds, tap water
Aspirin
NSAID: side effects; GI irritation, bleeding and increased risk of bleeding disorders.
Use with caution with children with patients with allergies and bleeding disorders and gastric ulcers & viral infections due to a risk of Reye’s syndrome
Ibuprofen (advil, Motrin)
NSAIDS, pain relief, fever reduction, anti-inflammatory
Effects: similar to aspirin prolonged use ulcers and GI bleed
Cautions: avoid with patients with known NSAIDs allergies & ulcers
Tylenol
Non-opioid analgesic; pain relief & fever reduction
Effects, seriously hurts kidneys, caution w/ pts with liver disease
Tramadol
Opioid analgesic. Moderate to severe pain.
SE: nausea, dizziness, constipation, respiratory depression & dependence
Cautions: avoid with pts w/ hx of seizures or those taking meds for seizures
Morphine
Indications: severe pain relief, post-surgery or palliative care,
Cautions: monitor for respiratory depression, sedation and the potential for dependence
