Diversity, Classification & Variation Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is biodiversity?
The variety of living organisms in an area.
What is a habitat?
The place where an organism lives
What is a community?
All the populations of different species living in a habitat.
What levels can biodiversity be considered at?
Global scale and a local scale (e.g. a small habitat local to you)
Two different measures of biodiversity
Species richness
Index of diversity
What does species richness not take into account?
It does not take into account that the population size of the species in the community affects the level of biodiversity
What are 5 agricultural practices that affect biodiversity?
Woodland clearance Hedgerow removal Pesticides Herbicides Monoculture (fields containing only one type of plant)
Give 3 examples of conservation schemes
Legal protection to endangered species
Protected areas- restrict further development (e.g. AONB)
Environmental Stewardship Scheme - encourages farmers to conserve biodiversity
