divisions of the nervous system Flashcards
(13 cards)
What does Central Nervous System (CNS) consist off and it’s function
- consists of the brain and spinal cord
- function is to process and coordinate information in the body
What does the peripheral nervous system (PNS) consist of and it’s function
- consists of all neural tissue outside the CNS
- function is to move messages to and from the brain and spinal cord
What is the afferent division
it carriers sensory information from PNS sensory receptors to CNS
What are the three types of receptors in the afferent division in the PNS
1) sensory - smell, touch, taste, vision, balance, and hearing
2) Visceral - monitors internal organs
3) Somatic - monitors skeletal muscle, joints, and the skin’s surface
What is the efferent division
it carries motor commands from CNS to PNS, muscles, and glands
What is the somatic nervous system
sends signals to skeletal muscles and controls skeletal muscle contractions
What is the autonomic system
it controls subconscious actions: contractions of smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glandular secretions
How is the autonomic system divided?
Into sympathetic division and parasympathetic division
define the sympathetic division and parasympathetic division
sympathetic division: has a flight or fight response
parasympathetic division: has a relaxing effect (rest and digest response)
Compare CNS and PNS
CNS - processes and coordinates information in the body
PNS - move messages to go to and from the brain and spinal cord
Compare Afferent and Efferent
Afferent - carries sensory information
Efferent - carries motor commands
Compare SNS and ANS
SNS - controls skeletal muscle contractions
ANS - controls subconscious actions
Compare sympathetic and parasympathetic
sympathetic - has a stimulating effect
parasympathetic - has a relaxing effect
