What’s divorce
Divorce is the legal dissolution of a marriage by a court.

Half marriages in the Uk and 1/3 of marriages in Northern Ireland
Why might marriages end
Arguments,Adultery, Money problems , Loss of job, Coping with elderly parents ,Alcohol or drug abuse ,False hopes, Depression, Homosexuality ,Sexual problems, Domestic violence , Infertility, Children , Bereavement , Lack of communication , Health problems
How can your be granted a divorce
The Matrimonial Causes (Northern Ireland) Order 1978 states that a person has to prove to the courts that a marriage has irretrievably broken down for a person to be granted a divorce.
What are grounds for divorce
- Adultery – by the other party
- Behaviour – which has made it unreasonable for the couple to stay together
- Desertion – for two years
- Separation and consent – the parties have lived apart for two years and the other party consents to the divorce
- Five year separation – the parties have lived apart for five years
Benefits of divorce
-Offer people the chance to start again
-Offer an escape from an abusive marriage
-Provide a healthier environment for children
-Improved relationships- A couple may be able to get on much better if they admit their marriage is not working and agree to separate
Impacts of divorce on husband/wife
-Partners may be emotionally hurt
• There could be financial problems for one or both
• They may have to move out of family home and away from children
• Court cases can be expensive and stressful
Impacts of divorce in people in church
• Church events may be awkward
• May split friendship groups
• People must be very understanding and careful not to judge

Confusion, grief, behaviour, blame, fear of abandonment, trust and attachment issues, change of environment
Impacts of divorce of the family of husband/wife
Financial, Emotional, disrupted relationships with family dynamics, change in family traditions, custody issues, pressure on relationships with extended family

Emotional, reluctance to pick sides, social shift, isolation

What do the Roman Catholic Church think of divorce
Divorce is not allowed because marriage is a sacrament which cannot be dissolved or ended.
Even if a couple get a civil (legal) divorce, Roman Catholics believe they are still married in the eyes of God and are not allowed to remarry.
If circumstances are difficult, the couple is permitted to live apart but they must not form a new relationship as this would be considered to be adulterous
What do the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, Church of Ireland and Methodist Church think of divorce
They all accept civil divorce as an end to marriage. They allow remarriage of divorced people in Church, but only if the minister is prepared to perform the ceremony.
How can sorting out problems as they arise save a marriage
If this doesn’t happen problems will build up and it is harder to sort out a range of problems than deal with each one as it arises.
How can working at the relationship save a marriage
All humans make mistakes and couples need to accept that to make marriage last you need to work at it. This attitude enables couples to work through their problems and accept that their partner is not perfect.
How can marriage counselling save a marriage
can help couples to see each other’s point of view and this can help to save a troubled marriage.
