Dna Flashcards
(9 cards)
How many chromosomes does a human body contain?
46/23 pairs - one of each from the mother and father
How many gametes (sperm and egg cells) does a human body hold?
23
What are chromosomes made of?
Very long molecules of DNA coiled tightly together
What are genes?
Short sections of DNA that code for a specific protein. Proteins determine the characteristics of the organism.
What is DNA?
(deoxyribonucleic acid) - the molecule that carries the coded instructions for life
What is DNA made of?
Nucleotides composed of a sugar, phosphate and base. The bases are a, t, c, g. A and t can only go with each other - same with c and g
Who was Rosalind Franklin?
Produced high quality photos so she could collect data ot show the structure of DNA.
Who was Maurice Wilkins?
Worked at King’s college and worked out how to make thread s of DNA.
Who were James Watson and Francis Crick?
Worked at Cambridge uni, didn’t have any results but got others including Franklin’s to figure out DNA’s structure. They favoured building models over experimental work
