DNA replication Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the process of DNA replication.

A
  • The two strands of the DNA unwind and unzip exposing the bases.
  • Each strand acts as a template for the synthesis of a new complementary strand.
  • So in the each of the two new molecules of DNA produced, one strand is maintained/pre-existing and one strand is newly synthesised.

Q

Explain why the replication of a DNA molecule is termed semi-conservative.

A
  • In the process of DNA replication, the two strands of the DNA separate and each strand is used as a template for the synthesis of a new complementary strand.
  • So in the each of the two new molecules of DNA produced, one strand is maintained/pre-existing and one strand is newly synthesised.
