DNA structure and replication Flashcards
1
Q
DNA structure
A
a double helix consisting of two strands of monomers called nucleotides
nucleotides is composed of a deoxyribose sugar, phosphate, and nitrogenous base
the strands are complementary, hydrogen bonds always bind A with T and C with G
2
Q
DNA replication
A
DNA copies itself in s phase, and is carried out by enzymes, the enzymes helicase and gyrase catalyse the unwinding and unzipping of parent molecules
3
Q
stages of DNA replication
A
- helicase, unzips strands
- DNA polymerase will attach free nucleotide along the length of exposed strand 5’ to 3’ direction
- finally DNA ligase, will bind strand together
