Levodopa

A
  • DA precursor: crosses BBB and is converted to DA
  • Given with carbidopa for parkinson’s unless pt is young
  • Side effects: dyskinesias, hypotension, nausea, anxiety, fatigue, psychoses
  • MAOA inhibitors are contraindicated

Carbidopa

A
  • AAAD inhibitor: inhibits peripheral conversion of L-DOPA into DA, does not cross BBB
  • Given with levodopa in parkinson’s
  • Side effects: dyskinesias, on-off phenomenon
  • MAOA inhibitors are contraindicated
