Pregnancy Category A
Demonstrated safety in HUMAN trials. Human trials showed no risk during any stage of pregnancy.
Pregnancy Category B
No fetal risk demonstrated in animal trials, with insufficient data in human trials. Also drugs with adverse events in animal trials but no known risk in humans.
Pregnancy Category C
Adverse events in animal trials with insufficient data in humans. Risk cannot be ruled out.
Pregnancy Category D
Demonstrated risk to fetal development. Drug can be used if benefit outweighs risk.
Pregnancy Category X
No known clinical use during pregnancy. Contraindicated due to severe, well-known side effects to fetal development.
Schedule I Drug
High potential for abuse and addiction. Not safe for medical use. Peyote, cannabis, LSD, heroin are common examples.
Schedule II Drugs
High potential for abuse and used for medical purposes under strict regulation. Includes methylphenidate, cocaine, methamphetamine, fentanyl, hydrocodone, oxycodone.
Schedule III Drugs
Medium risk for abuse. Examples include anabolic steroids, ketamine, most anorectic drugs.
Schedule IV Drugs
Lower potential for abuse compared to II and III. Examples include tramadol, most benzodiazepines, Z-drugs, phentermine
Schedule V Drugs
Mild risk for abuse. Codeine cough syrups, Lyrica and retigabine
