Pharmacodynamics Flashcards
(8 cards)
Selectivity
Ability of a drug to specifically target certain biological pathways or receptors without affecting others.
Affinity
Probability of a drug occupying a receptor. Can be impacted by both external and intracellular factors. Aging, genetics, and mutations can all impact affinity.
Intrinsic efficacy
Extent to which a drug can activate a receptor and produce a maximal biological response.
Residence time
Measure of how long the drug interacts with the body’s systems, which can influence its therapeutic effects and potential side effects
Agonist
Bind to receptors and activate them to stimulate a desired cellular response.
Antagonist
Binds to a receptor but does not activate it. Instead, it blocks the receptor, preventing other substances (like agonists) from binding and triggering a response.
Pharmacokinetics
Study of how drugs are absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted.
