MINT
Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria, Turkey
Recently rapidly growing economies that have the potential to be major world economies by 2050
GDP
How much money a country makes, usually over a year
GDP per capita is how much money the average person makes per year.
HDI
Human development index. Measures wealth using:
- Education (adult literacy)
- Wealth (GDP)
- Health (average life expectancy)
Colonialisation
The action or process of settling among and establishing control over the indigenous people of an area.
Natural resources
Materials or substances occurring in nature which can be exploited for economic gain
Commodities (and an example of one from the case study)
A raw material or primary agricultural product that can be bought or sold e.g. coffee
TNC
Transnational corporation. Company that operates in multiple countries. Typically headquarters in AC and factories in EDC/LIDC
Bilateral aid
Given by one country to another.
Multilateral aid
Given by multiple countries through international such as the IMF (international monetary fund)
Industry
The manufacturing of goods from raw materials
Raw materials
The basic material from which a product is made
Balance of trade
The difference between a country’s imports and exports
GNI
Gross national income (per capita)
Average income of the country found by total income of country divided by total population.
NGO
Non governmental organisation e.g. a charity
Sustainable development
Development that meets the needs of the people today without comprising the need of future generations.
PPP
Purchasing Power Parity. A theory that measures the price using a common good in different areas/countries to contrast the purchasing power of different currencies
E.g. £1 will buy you more in Indonesia than the UK
Millennium development goals
Eight international development goals that were established following the millennium summit of 2000.
They are: eradicate extreme poverty/hunger, universal primary education, promote gender equality, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health,combat disease e.g. HIV and malaria, ensure environmental sustainability and develop a global partnership for development
