Exam 1 (88 cards)
Where do the cranial nerves arise from?
The CNS
What are the 3 regions of the brainstem?
Mibrain
Pons
Medulla
What is the brainstem?
The transition between the brain and spinal cord
Label the purple, green, and blue areas
Midbrain - Purple
Pons - Green
Medulla - Blue
Where is the caudal end of the brainstem found?
At the foramen magnum
What is Cranial Nerve I?
Olfactory Nerve
What is the olfactory nerve made up of?
Axons of the olfactory receptor neurons.
Where are the cell bodies of the olfactory receptor neurons located? And where do the axons pass through?
In the nasal cavity - axons pass through the cribriform plate
The olfactory tract and bulb lie on what?
The ventral surface of the frontal lobes
Where do fibers of the olfactory nerve terminate?
In the olfactory cortex
Do fibers of the olfactory nerve emerge from the brainstem?
No - emerges from the Telencephalon
What does the olfactory nerve convey?
Conveys smell
What is Cranial Nerve II?
Optic Nerve
What does the optic nerve convey?
Conveys sight
Do fibers of the optic nerve emerge from the brainstem?
No - emerges from the diencephalon
What does the optic nerve pass through?
The optic canal
What is cranial nerve III?
Oculomotor Nerve
What does the oculomotor nerve pass thorugh?
Superior orbital fissure
Where does the oculomotor nerve emerge from?
The anterior aspect of the midbrain
What does the oculomotor nerve innervate?
Extraocular muscles
ciliary muscle
pupillary constrictor
What is cranial nerve IV?
Trochlear Nerve
Where does the Trochlear Nerve emerge from?
Posterior aspect of the midbrain
What does the Trochlear Nerve pass through?
Superior Orbital Fissure
What does the Trochlear Nerve innervate?
1 extraocular eye muscle
