E3 - Regulation Flashcards
What are osmoreceptors and where are they found?
Cells sensitive to osmotic pressure, located in the hypothalamus.
What do osmoreceptors stimulate?
Release of ADH (antidiuretic hormone) from the pituitary gland.
What does ADH do?
Increases water reabsorption by making the distal tubule and collecting duct more permeable to water.
What does the hypothalamus regulate?
Hunger, thirst, blood pressure, body temperature, fluid and salt balance.
What hormone regulates salt reabsorption?
Aldosterone (produced by adrenal cortex).
What does aldosterone do?
Increases Na+ reabsorption; Cl- and water follow. Also increases K+ secretion.
What is the healthy range for blood pH?
7.35–7.45
What are the 3 systems that regulate blood pH?
Blood buffer system, respiratory regulation, renal regulation.
How do the kidneys help regulate pH?
By secreting H+ and reabsorbing HCO3- as needed.
