Ears, Nose, & Throat Flashcards
(30 cards)
Acromegaly
hormonal disorder that develops when your pituitary gland produces too much growth hormone during adulthood
Cushing’s syndrome
excess cortisol secretion
Nephrotic syndrome
kidney disorder that causes your body to excrete too much protein in your urine, causes whole-body edema & pitting
Myxedema
severe form of hypothyroidism; skin appears swollen and puffy
Parkinson’s disease
a nervous system disorder causing lack of dopamine; face findings include a ‘mask like’ expression and decreased mobility
Bell’s Palsy
the muscles on one side of the face become weak or paralyzed due to trauma to CN VII
Otitis externa
inflammation (redness and swelling) of the external ear canal; “swimmer’s ear”; ; can result in conductive hearing loss
Otitis media
inflammation of the middle ear; can result in conductive hearing loss
Impacted cerumen
earwax (cerumen) build-up in the ear, blocking the ear canal; can cause temporary conductive hearing loss and ear pain
Otosclerosis
disease of the otic capsule characterized by pathologic, cyclic remodeling of the endochondral bone; results in conductive hearing loss
Otosclerosis
disease of the otic capsule characterized by pathologic, cyclic remodeling of the endochondral bone; results in conductive hearing loss
Cauliflower ear
perichondrial hematoma (“wrestler’s ear”); a deformity of the ear caused by trauma
Tophi
a deposit of crystalline uric acid
Battle’s Sign
mastoid ecchymosis; an indication of fracture of middle cranial fossa of the skull
Unilateral Sensorineural hearing loss presentation
lateralization to intact ear (by Weber test); AC>BC prevails but reduced overall
Unilateral Conductive hearing loss presentation
lateralization to affected ear (by Weber test); AC=BC or BC>AC in affected ear
Infected tympanic membrane
Bulging, erythematous, no light reflex, no body landmarks
TM bulging
Fluid build up
Tympanostomy tubes
small tubes that are surgically placed into the eardrum to help drain the fluid out of the middle ear and reduce the risk of ear infections
Tympanosclerosis
calcification of subepithelial connective tissue of TM and middle ear
Rhinorrhea
runny nose, clear drainage
Epistaxis
nose bleed
Nasal polyps
soft, painless, noncancerous growths on the lining of nasal passages or sinuses
Deviated septum
the bone and cartilage that divide the nasal cavity of the nose is significantly off center, or crooked
