EARTH AND ROCKS - Igneous and metamorphic rocks Flashcards
(16 cards)
What are igneous and metamorphic rocks made of?
Crystals.
Why are igneous and metamorphic rocks not porous?
They are made of crystals that don’t have any gaps between them.
What are some properties of igneous rocks?
- Hard
- Durable - difficult to damage
- Non-porous
What can igneous rocks be used for?
- Pavements
- Underneath the railway tracks
What type of rock is granite?
Igneous rock
How is granite formed?
- Unground liquid, called magma, cools
- It is hot underground, so magma cools slowly.
- Particles have time to arrange themselves into large crystals.
What type of rock is basalt?
Igneous rock
How is basalt formed?
- Above-ground liquid rock, called lava, cools
- It is cooler above ground, so lava cools fast.
- Particles don’t have time to arrange themselves so form small crystals.
What type of rock is marble?
Metamorphic rock
What type of rock is gneiss?
Metamorphic rock
What type of rock is slate?
Metamorphic rock
How are metamorphic rocks formed?
High heat and/or high pressure change existing rocks
How is marble formed?
- Starts as limestone
- High heat underground heats the limestone
- Limestone’s particles are rearranged –> Marble
How is Slate formed?
- Starts are mudstone
- High pressure underground squashes the mudstone.
- Water is squeezed out, making layers of crystals –> Slate
What are some properties of metamorphic rocks?
- Hard
- Non-porous
What can metamorphic rocks be used for?
- Kitchen worktops (marble)
- Roof tiles (slate)
