Q

How is granite formed?

A
  1. Unground liquid, called magma, cools
  2. It is hot underground, so magma cools slowly.
  3. Particles have time to arrange themselves into large crystals.

Q

How is basalt formed?

A
  1. Above-ground liquid rock, called lava, cools
  2. It is cooler above ground, so lava cools fast.
  3. Particles don’t have time to arrange themselves so form small crystals.

Q

How is marble formed?

A
  1. Starts as limestone
  2. High heat underground heats the limestone
  3. Limestone’s particles are rearranged –> Marble

Q

How is Slate formed?

A
  1. Starts are mudstone
  2. High pressure underground squashes the mudstone.
  3. Water is squeezed out, making layers of crystals –> Slate
