Minerals
A mineral is a naturally occurring chemical compound.
Magma
hot fluid material below or under the Earth’s crust.
Lithosphere
The rigid part of the Earth.
Sediments
Matter that falls to the bottom of a liquid.
Lava
Liquid that flows on Earth’s crust.
Igneous
Also known as volcanic rocks, are formed on the Earth’s crust.
Extrusive
A rock that extruded at the earth’s surface as lava or other volcanic deposits.
Abrasive
Rough and course.
Scoria
Basaltic lava fragments ejected from a volcano.
Pumice
A very light volcanic rock that solidifies rapidly above the Earth’s crust.
Basalt
A dark, fine grained volcanic rock.
Obsidian
A hard, dark, glass like volcanic rock formed by rapid solidification above the crust.
Granite
Granite is a common type of intrusive igneous rock.
Batholiths
A very large igneous intrusion.
Lustre
Lustre is the way light is reflected off a crystal, rock or mineral.
Moh’s Scale
The Moh’s Scale is the scale ranking the hardness and the scratch resistance of a mineral.
Streak
A mark of a different substance or colour.
Sedimentary Rocks
Sedimentary rocks are formed over a long period of time from particles of sediments.
Sandstone
Formed by the cementing together of grains of sand.
Shale
Shale is formed by the silt and clay size mineral that is called mud.
Conglomerate
Conglomerate is a combination of many different rocks that are formed and cemented to each other.
Mudstone
Mudstone is a fine-grained sedimentary rock whose original form were clay or mud.
Siltstone
Siltstone is a sedimentary rock which has a grain size in the silt range. It is also smother than sandstone, and coarser then claystones.
Coal
Coal is an organic rock that is formed by fossils over a very long period of time.
