earth science final- Flashcards
(7 cards)
Water is responsible for
the weathering of the Earth’s surface, deposition on the Earth’s surface, and eroding the Earth’s surface
Constructive forces
Build up Earth’s surface and land forms. includes deposition (accumulation of sediment - sand dunes and islands), volcanic eruptions (molten and islands), crustal deformation (mountain building and rift valleys)
Deconstructive forces
Weathering of rocks (by wind, water, and temperature), Erosion (removal and transportation of materials). Forms canyons, river valleys, and coastal erosion.
Mountain ranges blocking rainfall and creating rain shadow is an example of
Geosphere and Atmosphere
Ocean supporting many ecosystems including coral reefs and tide pools is
hydrosphere and biosphere
Caves are example of
Geosphere carved out by hydrosphere
Identify processes of carbon cycle and their impacts
Respiration (fast… performed by all living things); includes decomposition
Photosynthesis (fast… performed by plants); acts as a carbon sink, which helps regulate the amount of carbon in our atmosphere. Also stores energy to be consumed by herbivores and predators.
Exchange (dissolves into water, ocean releases it back); CO2 also combines with calcium ions to form calcium carbonate.
Sedimentation (slow…calcium carbonate solidifies); once precipitates out of water, forms limestone and dolomite rock through sedimentation and burial.
Burial; slow… small fraction of organic carbon in biomass incorporated into ocean sediments that become fossilized
Extraction; removal of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas (does not alter carbon cycle)
Combustion (fast) does release carbon into atmosphere
