Q

convection currents

A

The plates are constantly moving around due to a process called CONVECTION CURRENTS.
The hot liquid mantle creates friction against the underneath of the plates, which then either pushes the plate or drags it backwards depending on the direction of the convection beneath.

Convection currents result in the shifting of the tectonic plates, known as continental drift.
