Earthquakes Flashcards
(11 cards)
Epicenter
A point on the Earth’s surface directly above the hypocenter
Focus
Where slippage along the fault zone results in an earthquake
Surface Wave
Wave that travels across the surface of the Earth
Primary Wave (P)
Alternate between compressing and extending. They are fast traveling
Secondary Wave (S)
Fluid movement like ocean waves. Up and Down motion
Seismic Waves
Elastic Wave
Strike-Slip Fault
Fault movement in a horizontal direction.
Dip-slip Fault
Caused by a combo of shearing and tension or compression
Why are deep-focus earthquakes concentrated in subduction zones?
Earthquakes occur in the lithosphere. So, deep-focus earthquakes are concentrated in subduction zones, where elastic lithosphere is pushed deep into the upper mantle
Difference between magnitude and intensity
Magnitude is the ground movement and intensity is the measure of effects on humans ans surface features
3 Earthquake hazards
Fire: turn off all gas sources
Tsunamis: Walls
Liquefaction
