Earthquakes(hazards) Flashcards
(10 cards)
Define an earthquake
An earthquake is the sudden shaking of the Earth’s surface caused by the release of energy from the Earth’s crust, usually due to tectonic movements or fault activity.
What are the primary effects of an earthquake
Ground shaking
Ground rupture
What are the secondary effects of earthquakes
Soil liquefaction- soil releases liquid, or ground behaves like a liquid
Tsunamis
Landslides and avalanches
Tsunamis
Fires
Effects on people the built environment
What are the enviromental impacts of earthquakes
Hazards e,g tsunamis, landslides, avanalches
Disrupt migration patterns
Water pollution
Loss of habitat
Increase so2 and co2 within the atmosphere
Loss of diversity amongst animals
What are the social impacts of earthquakes ?
Deaths
Loss of income and jobs
Lack access to basic necessities
Property damage
Migration
Spread of disease
What are the economic impacts of earthquakes ?
Companies suffer, loss of jobs
Supply chains impacted
Cost of rebuilding
Direct cost of rescuing people
Aid from countries abroad
Political impacts
Relocation of people out of country
Define epicentre
Is the point on the earths surface directly above the focus of an earthquake, Where the shaking is usually strongest
Define focus
Is the point inside the earths crust where an earthquake originates, where stress is released as seismic energy
