Earthworks Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is Site establishment and and site clearing
The site shall be surveyed first to established the limit of work.
Clear everything within the limits of the earthworks except those to stay as mentioned in the contract documents or drawing.
What is free haul distance
is the specified distance wherein an excavated material will be hauled without additional cost.
What is Overhaul
is an authorized hauling in excess of the free haul distance.
What is Mass haul diagram?
it is a diagram provides a suitable means for studying haul and overhaul to compute the total payment.
What is a Borrow ?
material taken from outside of project
What is waste
Excavated material not used in the project
What is California bearing ratio (CBR)
is a penetration test for evaluation of the mechanical strength of road subgrades and basecourses.
What is subgrade?
In transport engineering, subgrade is the native material underneath a constructed road
What is formation level
pavement or railway
What is Non-Cohesive Soils
These soils are easy to work with because they drain water well and have a naturally high CBR.
What is cohesive soils?(clay?)
Clay is tricky because it changes with moisture. When it’s wet, it becomes soft and weak. When it dries, it shrinks and cracks.
•In New Zealand, where rainfall can be high, clay soils often need special treatment to make them stable enough for roads.
What soul stabilization?
Adding materials like lime or cement to the soil to make it stronger and less sensitive to water.
•This is common in wet areas of New Zealand, where clay soils are prone to becoming soft and unstable.
What is drainage
We install drains or use free-draining materials to keep water away from the subgrade. Wet soil is weak soil!
