eating behviours Flashcards

factors infuecning attitudes to foods and eating behaviours:
MOOD
1) our eating behaviour determines our MOOD
2) we choose to eat food when we are feeling very low
3) tryptophan is a building block for serotonin (a chemical that makes us calm)
4) CH do not contain trytophaann but do contain insulin. insulin slows down the competing amino acids
5) CH it controls tyrpothan leading to a better mood.
FOR evalution of attitudes to food and eating: MOOD
Brrinkworth et al- Followed 106 dieters for a year. they was overweight or obese . they had an average age of 50 years they was either put on a: 1) low CH- high fat diet 2)high fat- low CH This did not effect their weight- as they all lost na average of 30 pounds 1) showed more signs of depression and showed more hostile behaviour (CH do improve behaviour)
AGAINST- evaluation of attitudes to food and eating behaviour
McClernon et al- 119 volunteers
- they were assigned to either a low CH diet or allow fat diet.
- most participants experienced positive improvement s in a number of areas.
- does not 100% support the theory
- part might have been positive due to loosing weight
success and failures of dieting
herman and polivy
- they theorised that binge eating and diet linked
+ people who skip meals are more likely to eat more when they are given the chance to eat
+dieters can stick to their diets until they come across a food that they cannot have.
+when dieters have the chance to eat foods they will keep on eating until they are full resulting in them to gain more weight than they originally started with.
success and failures of dieting
herman and polivy
boundary model
+ the moel suggests that if a dieter is able to stick to their diet without thinking that they are going to break the rules then they have a good chance of maintaining the products
+ However, if they break the rule they will keep one eating the foods they cannot until they feel satisfied
+ if a dieter ate a choclate biscuit- instead of stopping at one they would eat the whole packet.
success and failures of dieting
OGDEN AND WARDLE
the cognitive element
they argued that once a dieter has crossed he boundary they will rebel against their diet and give up
+ may think that “i am just going to stuff my face”
+ they do not care they have broken their diet
