Anorexia Nervosa
Characterized by an intense fear of gaining weight and excessive weight loss
DSM-5 Criteria for AN
Restriction of energy intake relative to requirements, leading to a significantly low body weight in the context of age, sex, developmental trajectory, and physical weight.
Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, or persistent behavior that interferes with weight gain, even though underweight
Distorted perception of body shape and size, or persistent lack of recognition of the seriousness of the current low body weight.
What are the 3 AN Subtypes
Restricting subtype, Binge-eating/purging type, and Other compensatory behaviors (excessive exercise or fasting)
Binge eating
out of control consumption consumption of an amount of food far greater than most people would eat in the same amount of time, under same circumstances
Purge
Removal of food eaten (self inducing vomiting, misusing laxatives, diuretics, and enemas
Bulimia Nervosa
Characterized by uncontrollable binge eating and recurrent inappropriate behaviors to prevent weight gain
