Ecological succession

A

process of change in the species structure of an ecological community with a stable climate
occurs when natural community is disturbed or new land becomes available

ex. lakes which started out as dry land thousands of years ago

Formation of lakes

A
  1. glaciers melt
  2. pioneer plants establish themselves in bare land around new lake
  3. forest grows
    4, after centuries of plant matter dying and sinking to bottom of lake, lake becomes shallower
  4. lake becomes marsh (aquatic to bog)
  5. marsh becomes forest of black spruce

Optimal conditions

A

Every species grows best in certain environmental conditions
Species that grow most efficiently and produce most viable offspring are the most prominent in an ecosystem- continue to flourish as long as conditions are favourable
