What is a biosphere?
The portion of the earth that supports life
What is ecology?
The study of the interactions of organisms and their environment
What are biotic factors?
All the living organisms that inhabit an environment
What are abiotic factors?
All the non living parts of the environment
What is a population?
A group of organisms of one species that interbreed and live in the same area
What is a community?
A collection of populations that interact with one another
What is an ecosystem?
Interactions of a community and its abiotic factors
Niche vs habitat
Every species had s particular function in its community
What is a niche?
The role a species plays in a community
What is a habitat?
The place where the organism lives
What are autotrophs?
Organisms that use solar energy to make their own food
Also called producers
What’re heterotrophs?
Organisms that depend on other organisms for food and energy
Also called consumers
What are herbivores?
Eat only plants
What’re carnivores?
Eat other heterotrophs
What are scavengers?
Eat dead organisms
What are omnivores?
Eat both animals and plants
What are decomposers?
Absorb nutrients from dead organisms
What is symbiosis?
Relationships between organisms
What is it when one species benefits and the other is not harmed or benefited?
Commensalism
What is a symbolic relationship in which both species benefit?
Mutualism
What is it when a symbiotic relationship in which one species benefits and the other is harmed?
Parasitism
Who made the periodic table
Dmitri Mendeleev
What does the periodic table show
All known elements in the universe
What does the periodic table organize
The elements by chemical properties
