Ecology Flashcards
(11 cards)
What do we need to protect organisms for?
Disease
Predators
Habitat loss
What is In situ conservation?
Conservation of a species Within the natural environment.
This conserves the whole community/ecosystem
What is Ex situ conservation?
Conservation of a species Outside the natural environment (zoo)
What are the four classifications for abundance/conservation.
Extinct
Extinct in wild
Endangered
Vulnerable
What are some examples of active management techniques?
Controlled grazing
Restrict human access
Controlling poaching
Feeding animals
Halting succession
What are the three ways of measuring/studying biodiversity
Habitat biodiversity
Species biodiversity
Genetic biodiversity
What is Habitat biodiversity?
It is the number of different habitats found in an area.
What is species biodiversity
It is both the species richness (number of different species living in an area) and species evenness (a comparison of the number of individuals of each species living in a community)
What is Genetic biodiversity?
It refers to the variety of genes that make up a species
What is a pooter?
It is used to catch small animals by sucking into a mouthpiece, drawing the insects into a holding chamber.
What are some factors that may effect genetic biodiversity?
Genetic bottlenecks (few individuals survive event)
Founder effect (small number of individuals create new colony away from others)
Mutation
Natural selection
Rare breeds
Captive breeding programs
