Nucleic acids Flashcards
(16 cards)
What are Purines
They are larger molecules like Adenine and Guanine
What are Pyrimidines
They are smaller molecules like Thymine and cytosine
How many hydrogen bonds to C and G have
3 bonds
How many hydrogen bond do A and T have
2 bonds
The concentration of adenine within a double helix is equal to.
The concentration of thymine
The concentration of cytosine within a double helix is equal to
The concentration of Guanine
The double helix of DNA has these features:
Watson-Crick base-pairing, A will only base-pair with T, and C with G. G-C base-pairs are more stable than A-T base-pairs.
Two polynucleotide strands wound around each other. The backbone of each consists of alternating deoxyribose and phosphate groups
What is mRNA
It is messenger RNA, carries a gene’s message out of the nucleus.
What is tRNA
Transfers genetic information from mRNA to an amino acid sequence as to build a protein, they contain an anticodon on the bottom of their clover leaf esq structure which bind to the mRNA in the ribosome to create a polypeptide chain.
What is rRNA
It is ribosomal RNA. Part of the ribosome which is involved in translation.
What are triplets? DNA
3 bases in a codon.
What is Non-overlapping? DNA
each base is included only once.
What is meant by universal in DNA
all organisms have the same DNA
What is a degenerate for DNA?
Multiple codons code for the same amino acids.
What is a gene?
It is a section of DNA that codes for a polypeptide
What are the main differences between DNA and RNA?
- DNA is double stranded, RNA is single stranded
2.DNA has deoxyribose as the sugar, RNA has ribose - Bases for DNA = ATGC, Bases for RNA = AUGC
4.DNA is stable, RNA is unstable - DNA is a large molecule, RNA is small
