Ecosystems Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is an ecosystem
A natural system made up of plants, animals and the environment
What are the biotic components of an ecosystem
Living components such as plants and animals
What are the abiotic components of an ecosystem?
Non - living components environmental factors such as wind, light, climate (rainfall, temp.)
What’s a biome
Global - scale ecosystem
List the 7 biomes
Temperate rainforest, Coniferous forest, Polar, Tundra, Savahnna, Temperate Grassland, Mediterranean
What’s a producer
Producers make their own food by converting energy from environment into sugars; usually plants convert the sun’s light
What’s a consumer
An organism that gets its energy from other organisms by eating them
What’s a decomposer
Organisms, such as fungi, that break down other organic material; releasing the nutrients back into the soil
What’s the nutrient cycle?
When decomposers break down organic matter, they release nutrients back into the soil, which new organisms can use to grow. This is nutrient cycling.
What’s a food chain
Shows the direct links between producers and consumers in the form of a simple line
What’s a food web
Shows interrelationships between producers and consumers in more complex way
