Ecosystems Flashcards
(31 cards)

extinction

The process of species becoming terminated

invasive species

species that are not native to their current environment and dominate, pushing out native species.

alien species
species living outside there native distributional range
The part of the earth´s surface that supports life.
Biosphere
The gasses envelope surrounding the earth : the air.

Atmosphere
an eco-system that is capable of withstanding pressure, and give support to new species
Sustainable Ecosystem
A substance of the earth that provides nourishment for life.
Nutrients

the living parts of an eco-system

Biotic

the non living parts of an ecosystem

abiotic

the solid outer section of the earth’s crust
lithosphere
the liquid water component of the earth
hydrosphere

An animal that preys on others

Predator

An animal that is hunted

Prey

when two different species exist in a relationship in which they benefit from each other
Mutualism
The accumulation of a substance within a living organism
Bioaccumulation
The process that take place in the cells of organisms to produce usable chemical energy.
Cellular Respiration
the size of a population that can be supported indefinitely by the available resources and services of an ecosystem
Carrying Capacity
the role and function of an organism within an ecosystem
Ecological Niche
all the waters found on earth, such as lakes and oceans & ground water, and some times consisting of water above the earth’s surface, such as clouds
hydrosphere
Is an ethic that embodies the responsible planning and managing of resources to preserve all the living things in an area.
Stewardship
It is the scientific study supporting the practice of helping ecosystems recover from damage.
Restoration ecology
The use of either naturally occurring or deliberately introduced micro organisms to clean up toxic chemicals in water or soil.
Bioremediation
the variety of different types of life found on earth
biodiversity
an ecosystem that is water-based either fresh water or salt water
aquatic ecosystem
