EDTEC 544 - Learning Theories Flashcards
(9 cards)
Elaboration theory:
Simple to complex.
Cognitivist
Dual coding theory
Breaks learning into two cognitive subsystems:
- Images (images) lead to non- verbal processes.
- Verbal (logogens) lead to verbal processes
Yet 1. & 2. cross refer in processing
(Cognitivist)
Social development Theory
- Cognitive development is limited to a certain range at any given age
- Full cognitive development requires social interaction
Andragogy
Instruction for adults needs to focus more on the process and less on the content being taught
Anchored instruction theory
- Design learning and teaching around an anchor (case study or problem situation)
- Curriculum materials allow learner exploration e.g. interactive multimedia
Cognitive load theory
- Instructional material must first be processed by working memory.
- For schema acquisition, design instruction to reduce working memory load.
- Target chunks of information 5 +/- 2 chunks
Component display Theory
Learning is classified in two dimensions: content and performance
Constructivist theory
Learners construct new ideas or concepts based on their current / past knowledge
Criterion-referenced instruction
Instruction based on objectives where students are given opportunity to study and practice skills not yet mastered (the objectives)
