What is cultural deprivation?
The belief that many working class and black children lack values languages and beliefs to success in school
What is restricted code?
Limited vocabulary with grammatically simple sentences
What is elaborate code?
Wide range of vocabulary with long grammatically complex Sentences
What is subculture
A group of people who have attitudes and values which will differ to wider society
What is material deprecation?
The lack of basic necessities e.g diet and clothes and money to buy things
What is the cultural capital ?
The tastes, languages and values of the middle class
What where the aims of the 1979-1997 conservative government?
Reduce state control over education making school more independent
Make schools compete with each other to drive standards
To give more choice to parents
What did the new labour government in 1997-2010 aim to do?
Introduced tuition fees for university to allow the smartest to go
Aim higher programmes to improve relationships between students and universities
EAZ so poorer people have a chance to go to university by raising standards
What is privatisation?
The concept used to explain the transfer of public owned assets such as schools to private companies
What are the 3 main explanations for cultural deprivation?
Language
Attitude and values
Parental support
What are the causes of material deprivation?
Lack of language skills
Traditions not allowing them out the house e.g some Muslim households
Most live in deprived areas with high unemployment
What is teacher labelling?
Teachers giving negative or positive labels towards a student without knowing them e.g black as bad and Asian as good
What is setting and streaming?
Teacher stereotypes result in students being placed in lower sets as teachers assume they will be bad in education
What is student subcultures?
Students accepting the label they have been given so act in that way as a self fulfilling prophecy
