What are some material deprivation factors and how does it impact education

A

Housing - Poor housing can affect a pupils achievement directly and indirectly, overcrowding no room for educational activties and disturbed sleep and higher chance of getting ill and absence from school
Living in temp accommodation caused a more distrubed education

Diet - Lower intakes of energy, poor nutritional health that can weaken a childs immune system and cause absence in school

A

Becker talks of how teachers judge and label pupils according to how closely they fit the ideal pupil, therefore they dampen the motivation of those who do not fit that and divert their time away from them

A

When students are given a positive label they react to it but creating a positive self concept which means they work hard and improve their grades, however this also works in reserve and can cause negative self concepts and less motivation

Rosenthal and Jacobson - Studied this by informing teachers of students who scored higher on an IQ and would be a quick leaner. The tests were fake and those who were identified as clever were treated differently. 47% of those identified as clever had an improvement due to extra attention giving to them
