Yes, it happens outside of the education system

Bernstein - Working class children are at a disadvantage because elaborated code is used by the education system, middle class are socialised into this so have an advantage

What are some material deprivation factors and how does it impact education
Housing - Poor housing can affect a pupils achievement directly and indirectly, overcrowding no room for educational activties and disturbed sleep and higher chance of getting ill and absence from school
Living in temp accommodation caused a more distrubed education
Diet - Lower intakes of energy, poor nutritional health that can weaken a childs immune system and cause absence in school

Bourdieu - Middle class children with a better CC equipped to meet demands of school. Parents can convert cultural capital into economic capital by sending kids to private school

Who talks about the ‘ideal pupil’
Becker talks of how teachers judge and label pupils according to how closely they fit the ideal pupil, therefore they dampen the motivation of those who do not fit that and divert their time away from them
What is the self fulfilling prophecy
When students are given a positive label they react to it but creating a positive self concept which means they work hard and improve their grades, however this also works in reserve and can cause negative self concepts and less motivation

Rosenthal and Jacobson - Studied this by informing teachers of students who scored higher on an IQ and would be a quick leaner. The tests were fake and those who were identified as clever were treated differently. 47% of those identified as clever had an improvement due to extra attention giving to them

Gillborn and Youdell found that teachers labelled working class students as unintelligent, resulting in them being placed in lower streams and sets
