What is a coalition?

A

This combination of 2 different political parties forming the government. This was led by David Cameron.

What occurred in 2010?

A

In 2010, no party won a majority so the party with the most MP’s- Conservatives- joined together with another party who also had some MP’s- the Liberal Democrats to create a Govt.

What are Free Schools?

A

Free schools were introduced by the coalition govt. They are set up by a group of parents. You don’t have to teach National Curriculum. Intended to create more choice in disadvantaged areas.

What are Linear A-Levels?

A

Brought in by Education Secretary Michael Gove. All exams now to be taken only at the end of the course. Coursework to be removed from most subjects.

What is Pupil premium?

A

Extra funding for schools with students on Free school meals. This funding must be spent on improving the education experience of these pupils.

A

Michael Gove talked about Britain needing to be competitive on the world stage, and therefore the education system needing to be amongst the best in the world .

Effects of Free schools:

A

If a group of parents set up a free school in a particular area, its likely to attract the best teachers making it difficult for other schools to fill in teaching vacancies.

Effects of Pupil premium:

A

Pupil premium funding is supposed to improve the experience of the disadvantaged pupils but this makes it difficult to track- this money could just end up in the whole school budget. Is it really making a difference to the disadvantaged pupils?

The coalition govt decision to increase Uni fees from £3000 to £9000 was controversial. It was seen by some as off-putting for working-class students.
